This is one of the defining movies of my childhood. I can’t remember how old I was when I first watched it, or what year that would’ve been, but it was a staple through my adolescent years.
At some time I put it back in some lonely corner of my collection and forgot about it till I was a man grown. At this time I watched it with reluctance, knowing a viewing so many years later, would undoubtedly spoil my memories of it, as adulthood does to so many things we cherished as children, but with astonishment I attest to you that the beauty of the film is not lost with the passing of time or the hardening of the mind and mind from childhood to adulthood.
As of this writing I am 32, and the message of this wonderful film rings as true now as it did when I was a boy. It is not harping or condescending, it’s about friendship, love and community. About growing together and growing apart. I may be the only person in the world who feels this way, but to me The Buttercream Gang is a masterpiece.
